What Knowledge Have You Connected With Past Knowledge?

As I stated in an earlier post, this course in Biochemistry has really tied a few of my past courses together. It makes sense of biology and chemistry and ties them together. It sheds some light on why exactly we have to learn what we learn in bio and chem, how that info applies. But one of the most interesting things about this class is the presentations on random topics from the text book. These presentations dont just connect with knowledge from other classes, but they connect with general knowledge that we already know from all areas of life. A couple of the most prominent examples I can think of are : "why twins are not identical", and "why we should eat more salmon". These presentations connect biochemistry with many other parts of our lives, and i feel that this is the most enjoyable and applicable connection that we have made so far.

  1. The "extra topics" from the book are great! As a mom of twins, I am always interested in studies on the genetics of twins because there really is little known about it. My boys are fraternal twins, which means they are no more similar than being brothers born at different times, they just shared the same space for 9 months. I know 2 sets of identical twins, and each set is different. One has the same likes, dislikes and physical mannerisms, while the other are opposite in personality, likes and mannerisms. So learning that there can be minor changes to the genetic sequence was really amazing!

  2. That is so interesting that the two sets of twins are so completely different. Im glad you agree about the extra topics in the book. Its nice to have a section that points out real world applications of topics we are learning.

  3. I agree with both of you! The presentations definitely puts what we've learned into perspective. It's great that we can correlate them into everyday situations.
